Hair update

So haven’t posted a text post about my hair in a while, so heres something new for you guys!

As you guys know I’m on a natural hair/healthy hair journey….thought I’d update quickly cause theres a LOT of change in my hair.

Okay first of all, to monitor and analyse hair changes I capture what my hair looks like at least every week and keep a diary of what products I’m using and what products I’ve stopped using, my hair wash date and treatment dates.

As you know my healthy hair journey consists of minimal heat. Since december 2011 I’ve straightened my hair about 3 times (including my trip to the hairdressers).

Curl pattern

Since I don’t straighten my hair much I’ve noticed my curl pattern change, I have SOOO much curl definition and my curls drop nicely. (My hair is of a kinky texture so I do have to go through a process to get it curly). Once I have spritzed my hair with olive oil, water and conditoner I add some eco styler gel (olive oil hold:10) to give me even more curl definition.

Oils & creams

  1. Using your fingertips, apply high quality castor oil to your roots and scalp.
  2. Make sure that you distribute the oil evenly on the scalp.
  3. Do your best to avoid the oil fro getting into your hair as its thick consistency may be hard to wash out.
  4. After applying it to your scalp, cover your hair with a plastic cap and wrap it in a towel.
  5. Let the oil stay in your hair for at least 15 to 20 minutes or allow it to set overnight.
  6. Wash it out with shampoo after to remove the castor oil.
  7. Do this once a week for 6-8 weeks to see the results.

I recently received Carol’s Daughter hair pomade sent to me by the lovely people @ gidore hair…and wow I must say I love this product! Its great at moisturising and all you need is a dab so a little really does go a long way.

Kitchen products

Now I’ve turned into a right 100% natural kitchen hair product lover lol! Any fruits, bits and bobs that work with my hair I LOOOVE! Okay so one thing I whipped up was Mayo, Banana and honey as a leave in conditoner, I must say I loved it and the feeling of my hair but hated the banana in my hair…I’ll never be using that again.

Mayo & honey have become my two favourite hair products, when I wash my hair I noticed the mayo almost straightenes my hair whilst in the shower!

Tryna keep this post short and sweet hehe, hope you’re all doing good for healthy hair journeys…I’ll be setting myself some challenges that you can all follow in months to come.

Long hair - do we all deserve it?

So as you may or may not know, I’m obsessed with long hair. In previous years I’ve always yearned for longer hair but I now ask myself this question….do I actually deserve it?

At the age of 10, my hair got permed simply because it was long bushy and very thick which made it hard for my mother to handle. Anyway, I only permed my hair about 3 times before I told my mum I didn’t want my hair permed any more. As the years passed I grew my perm out without any treatments/trims. This had such a bad effect on my hair where it broke from chest length to shoulder length.

As more years went by I was about 14/15 when i started using straighteners, gel and grease. I had no knowledge of how to maintain my hair and just cared about what it looked like at that present moment and not in the long run. Having said this by the time I left school and started college my hair was neck length, I absolutely hated it.

At about 17 I landed a job in a hairdressers as receptionist where I learnt more about hair but wasn’t taking good care of mine. I started weaving my hair at 17 non-stop til 2011 where I decided to stop. My hair had reached boob length, which I was happy with but my hair was very split so had to take a trip to the hairdressers.

My point for this post is that most of us women yearn for longer hair no matter what hair texture type. The question is do we do enough to maintain its healthiness or do we actually prolong hair growth?

My knowledge of taking care of my hair previously has not been of the sharpest, but having done my research..speaking to people, watching videos, reading blogs etc I have learnt so many things and can’t wait to achieve my set goals.

I’ve completely changed my diet and exercise on a weekly basis, This has changed the way I feel and apparently my skin looks radiant!

Can I also add that afro caribbean hair is beautiful and can grow like any other texture. May take abit longer, but with that extra care we can all achieve what we want.

Are you with me ladies?
